Golf gained popularity among the mass audience when<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/tigerwoods.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tiger Woods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hailing from a modest background, took the sport by storm two decades ago.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Woods has hit hard times, both on and off the course, newer stars, including Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson, are competing with established veterans like Woods and Phil Mickelson; golf\u2019s popularity, ratings and prize money continue to soar. Today, golf\u2019s rich heritage is celebrated at historic clubs and courses around the world, reflecting its journey from the windswept links of Scotland to a global sporting tradition.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Aim of golf<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golf aims to get the ball with fewest strokes possible into each of the 18 holes. (Some courses have nine holes, but the four major championships play with 18 holes).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The golfer \u201ctees off\u201d (starts the game) for each hole with the aim of getting the ball either as close to the putting green \u2013 or the hole as possible. The teeing ground is the designated area where the first stroke on each hole is made, marked by specific markers to help players optimise their shot and follow the rules.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Golf course and equipment<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golfers use a set of \u201cclubs\u201d to play the game. They may seem like a bag of sticks, but each club is distinctly different and serves a unique function when playing golf. The three variants are called woods, irons and putters.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing on different courses with varying layouts and terrains requires golfers to adapt their strategies and skills.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golfers use woods to strike the ball the farthest when teeing off. The flag is removed when players are on the putting green.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Rough<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Acting as the course border, it is the ground surrounding the runway and is neither grass or smooth. Hence, players wish to avoid \u201cbeing in the rough.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><b>Out of bounds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; As its name suggests, where play is not permitted.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Sand Bunker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a sandy area of the course, again best to be avoided.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Water hazard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a body of water on the course where players also avoid. The ball in the water needs to be chipped out.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Fairway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; The part of the course beginning at the tee-off and along the putting green.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Putting green<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Usually referred to as the green, the smooth grassy surface is where players attempt to keep the ball on.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Drive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Usually the first strike of the ball with a club. Courses are known as \u201clinks\u201d \u2013 an old Scottish English term, and being mainly in Scotland, conditions can be blustery and challenging for the best players to win. Prize money, even though based in the UK, has been in US dollars since 2017 and currently stands at $16.5 million.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>PGA Championship<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pga.com\/events\/pgachampionship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PGA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the last of the four annual major golf tournaments, known as the US PGA for those outside the USA.
