How much does the electricity exchange price cost
MoneyHub is committed to collecting and providing consumers with the latest information. We search for the best prices to offer everyone awareness of their options.
MoneyHub experts say:
If you use an electricity exchange package, monitor how much electricity costs in real time and shift the use of high-consumption appliances (e.g., washing dishes or laundry, drying) to nighttime or weekends when electricity is cheapest.
What is the electricity exchange price?
The electricity exchange price is the price at which electricity is bought and sold on the European energy exchange Nord Pool. The electricity exchange price is determined separately for each quarter of an hour based on the bids made by electricity producers and the expected demand. The price is significantly influenced by both the season and the functioning of external connections. For example, on September 1, 2025, the Estlink 1 electricity connection between Estonia and Finland was shut down due to a technical failure. Such incidents affect the price of electricity.
Prices are quoted in cents per kWh (cents per kilowatt-hour) or €/MWh (euros per megawatt-hour). Various fees must be added to this: for network services, renewable energy fees, and electricity excise duty. Of course, electricity in Estonia is also subject to value added tax (24%).
How is the price of electricity determined in Estonia?
Estonia is part of the European common electricity market, which means that the price of electricity depends on the prices prevailing on the Nord Pool exchange. The exchange price changes every quarter of an hour, depending on how much electricity is currently needed (demand) and how much is being produced (supply).
How can you monitor electricity prices?
You can monitor electricity exchange prices in the following ways:
- On the Nord Pool website, where you can see prices for both Estonia and other regions.
- Various web and mobile apps that display electricity prices in real time.
- Of course, you can always find the electricity exchange price here, in MoneyHub’s price information.
How to understand electricity prices?
- The price is given in cents per kWh (in addition to cents per kWh, €/MWh is also used).
- The average price per day may be, for example, 10 cents/kWh, but the price per hour may vary – cheaper at night and more expensive during the day (although this is not always the case).
- If the exchange price is 4 cents/kWh at 8:00 p.m. today, then electricity is cheap at that time. At 9:00 a.m., it may be over 10-12 cents/kWh.
- The best time to consume electricity is when the price is lowest (usually at night or on weekends).
How to use electricity price data?
- Follow the Nord Pool spot electricity price chart for today and tomorrow to find out when electricity is cheaper.
- For example: if tomorrow‘s average price is low, you can shift your higher consumption (e.g., washing clothes) to cheaper hours.
- Since electricity price information is known in advance, you can plan your consumption in time.
Important terms:
- Kilowatt-hour (kWh): unit of measurement for electricity consumption.
- Cents/kWh: price in cents per kilowatt-hour.
- Real time: data that is constantly updated (e.g., every hour).
- Average price: average electricity price for the entire day or week.
Summary:
Following the market price of electricity can help you save money if you shift your higher consumption to cheaper hours. Keep an eye on prices: electricity is cheaper to consume when demand is lower.
